33.1-223.2:3. Directional signs for certain educational institutions.

Upon request from the institution, the Commissioner shall erect and maintain,at appropriate and conspicuous locations along interstate, primary, orsecondary highways, signs providing motorists directions to the main orbranch location of any Virginia educational institution. All costs associatedwith production and erection of signs under this section shall be borne bythe affected institution, but all costs associated with maintenance of thosesigns shall be borne by the Virginia Department of Transportation. For thepurpose of this section, "Virginia educational institution" means afor-profit educational institution with its main campus located in Virginiathat (i) has, for at least five consecutive years prior to making a requestunder this section, awarded academic degrees approved by the State Council ofHigher Education; (ii) offers programs in workforce training or job readinessthat contribute to Virginia's economic growth and development; and (iii) hasa combined annual enrollment of at least 1,000 students at its main campusand any branch location situated within a radius of twenty-five miles fromthe main campus. Signs erected by the Virginia Department of Transportationunder this section shall be placed in accordance with all applicableDepartmental regulations.
