§ 184. Virgin Islands Police Week, Peace Officers Memorial Day

  • (a) May 15 of each year shall be observed as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” and the calendar week during which such May 15 occurs shall be observed as “Virgin Islands Police Week”.

  • (b) At least 15 days prior to Virgin Islands Police Week, the Governor shall issue a proclamation calling upon residents of the Virgin Islands, schools, civic organizations and other organizations to plan appropriate observances of the occasion.

  • (c) The Police Commissioner is authorized to plan programs, exhibits, and other presentations which are designed to acquaint the public with various aspects of crime control and prevention and to further understanding of the structure, methods and capabilities of the police force.

  • (d) There are hereby created two Virgin Islands Police Awards Committees, one for the District of St. Thomas-St. John and one for the District of St. Croix. Each committee shall consist of five members, three of whom shall not be members of the Police Division or employees of the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department (V.I.P.D.), to be appointed by the Governor. The members of each committee shall serve for one year and may be reappointed for additional terms. Each committee shall choose annually from among the members of the police force in its district those police personnel whom it deems deserving of special recognition because of an outstanding act of heroism, all-round professional proficiency, devotion to duty or other outstanding conduct. Each committee shall, in addition, select one member of the police force in each District to be recognized as “Policeman of the Year”. The first committee in each District appointed pursuant to this act is authorized to determine an appropriate award in the form of a medal, ribbon or special plaque to be presented to those who are selected for recognition.
