CHAPTER 566 - INSPECTION AND POSSESSION OFHIDES AND CARCASSES

NRS 566.015 Departmentdefined.

NRS 566.025 Conditionsauthorizing possession of carcass of bovine animal.

NRS 566.015 Departmentdefined. As used in this chapter, Departmentmeans the State Department of Agriculture.

NRS 566.025 Conditionsauthorizing possession of carcass of bovine animal. Itis unlawful for any person to have in his possession all or part of the carcassof any bovine animal unless:

1. The animal was slaughtered at a slaughteringestablishment under a United States Government, state, county or municipalinspection system which provides for adequate stamping for identification ofall carcasses or parts of carcasses before release; or

2. The person exhibits to any peace officer authorizedby the Department under NRS 566.035, orto any inspector of the Department, on demand:

(a) The hide of the animal from which the carcass wasobtained, with ears and brands attached without disfiguration or alteration;

(b) A certificate of inspection or release of thecarcass, or of the carcass and hide, issued by an inspector of the Department;or

(c) A bill of sale, memorandum of sale or otherdocument, signed by the seller or donor of the meat, showing the name andaddress of the seller or donor.

NRS 566.027 Personsslaughtering cattle without formal inspection system required to retain hidesfor 30 days; exhibition of hides or certificate of release. Any person who slaughters any cattle, unless the animalwas slaughtered at a slaughtering establishment under a United StatesGovernment, state, county or municipal inspection system which provides foradequate stamping for identification of all carcasses or parts of carcassesbefore release, shall retain in his possession the hide or hides removed fromthe cattle with the ears and brands attached without disfiguration oralteration, for a period of 30 days, unless the hide or hides are releasedpursuant to a certificate of release issued by an inspector of the Department.The person shall, upon demand within that period by any inspector of theDepartment or any game warden or peace officer of this state, exhibit the hideor hides of any cattle so slaughtered or the certificate of release.

NRS 566.035 Inspectionby inspectors of Department and peace officers.

1. In addition to regular inspectors of theDepartment, the Department may authorize and direct any elected or appointedpeace officer to conduct the inspection provided for in this chapter.

2. The peace officer shall conduct the inspectionunder the supervision of the Department.

NRS 566.045 Penalties. Any person who violates any of the provisions of thischapter is guilty of a gross misdemeanor and, in addition to any criminalpenalty, shall pay to the Department an administrative fine of not more than$1,000 per violation. If an administrative fine is imposed pursuant to thissection, the costs of the proceeding, including investigative costs andattorneys fees, may be recovered by the Department.
