41-4351 State commission on civic education and civic engagement; membership; duties

41-4351. State commission on civic education and civic engagement; membership; duties

A. The state commission on civic education and civic engagement is established consisting of the following members:

1. Three members who are appointed by the governor, who may have previously served in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government and who are not currently serving in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government.

2. One member who is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives, who may have previously served in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government and who is not currently serving in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government.

3. One member who is appointed by the president of the senate, who may have previously served in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government and who is not currently serving in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government.

4. One member who is appointed by the chief justice of the Arizona supreme court, who may have previously served in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government and who is not currently serving in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government.

5. One member who is appointed by the secretary of state, who may have previously served in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government and who is not currently serving in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government.

6. One member who is appointed by the attorney general, who may have previously served in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government and who is not currently serving in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government.

7. One member who is appointed by the superintendent of public instruction, who may have previously served in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government and who is not currently serving in an elected office in municipal, county, state or federal government.

B. The members of the commission shall annually elect cochairpersons from among its members. Members shall serve two year terms, may be appointed to consecutive terms without limitation and are not eligible to receive compensation or reimbursement for expenses.

C. The commission shall:

1. Promote the informed, responsible participation in political activities by American citizens who are committed to the fundamental values and principles of the American system.

2. Promote civic education and engagement in civic activities for persons of all ages.

D. The commission may:

1. Make recommendations to all levels of government for the promotion and enhancement of civic education and civic engagement.

2. Establish subcommittees, task forces or work groups, or any combination of these groups.

3. Collaborate and work with any legislative committee established to examine civic education and engagement.

4. Collaborate and work with various groups that are dedicated to or interested in civic education and civic engagement.

5. Accept, deposit in a state account, spend and account for donations, gifts, bequests and devises that are consistent with the overall purpose and objectives of the commission.

6. Employ up to two persons in full-time equivalent positions that are funded through donations, gifts, bequests and devises received by the commission.
