46.2-1158.1. Extension of validity of vehicle safety inspection approvalstickers issued for vehicles whose registered owners are persons in the armedservices of the United States.

Notwithstanding any contrary provision of law, any vehicle safety inspectionapproval sticker issued for any vehicle whose registered owner is a person inthe armed services of the United States shall be held not to have expiredduring the period of the owner's official absence from the Commonwealth inthe armed services of the United States. Should the armed services member bedomiciled in another state of the United States, nothing in this sectionshall be construed to absolve such person from obtaining a current inspectionsticker from his state of domicile, if required by such state. In cases wherethe vehicle does not have a current, valid vehicle safety inspection approvalsticker and returns to or becomes operational in the Commonwealth, for anyreason, the operator will have 24 hours, Sundays and holidays excepted, tohave the vehicle inspected. Furthermore, no penalty shall be imposed on anysuch owner or operator for operation of a motor vehicle, trailer, orsemitrailer after the expiration of a period fixed for the inspectionthereof, over the most direct route between the place where such vehicle iskept or garaged and an official inspection station for the purpose of havingit inspected pursuant to an appointment with such station.

For the purposes of this section, "service in the armed services of theUnited States" includes active duty service with the regular armed forces ofthe United States or the National Guard or other reserve component.
