22-3727a. Notification to victims of the escape or death of certain committed defendants or inmates; when. (a) The secretary of corrections shall, as soon as practicable, provide notification as provided in K.S.A. 22-3303, 22-3305, 22-3428, 22-3428a, 22-3430, 22-3431 and 22-3727, and amendments thereto, and upon the escape or death of a committed defendant or inmate while in the custody of the secretary of social and rehabilitation services, to any victim of the defendant or inmate's crime whose address is known to the secretary of corrections, and the victim's family, if so requested and the family's addresses are known to the secretary of corrections. Such notice shall be required to be given only if the defendant was charged with, or the inmate was convicted of, any crime in article 33, 34, 35 or 36 of chapter 21 of the Kansas Statutes Annotated, prior to their repeal, or articles 53, 54, 55 or 56 of chapter 21 of the Kansas Statutes Annotated, or K.S.A. 2013 Supp. 21-6104, 21-6325, 21-6326 or 21-6418 through 21-6421, and amendments thereto.

(b) As used in this section, "victim's family" means a spouse, surviving spouse, children, parents, legal guardian, siblings, stepparent or grandparents.
