Title 46 Motor vehicles
46.12 Certificates of title.
46.12.181 Duplicate for lost, stolen, mutilated, etc., certificates.

If a certificate of ownership is lost, stolen, mutilated, or destroyed or becomes illegible, the first priority secured party or, if none, the owner or legal representative of the owner named in the certificate, as shown by the records of the department, shall promptly make application for and may obtain a duplicate upon tender of five dollars in addition to all other fees and upon furnishing information satisfactory to the department. The duplicate certificate of ownership shall contain the legend, "duplicate." It shall be provided to the first priority secured party named in it or, if none, to the owner.

     A person recovering an original certificate of ownership for which a duplicate has been issued shall promptly surrender the original certificate to the department.
