3.1-796.86. (Effective until July 1, 2007) How to obtain license.

Any person may obtain a dog license or cat license if required by anordinance adopted pursuant to subsection B of 3.1-796.85, by making oral orwritten application to the treasurer of the county or city in which suchperson resides, accompanied by the amount of license tax and currentcertificate of vaccination as required by this article. The treasurer orother officer charged with the duty of issuing dog and cat licenses shallonly have authority to license dogs and cats of resident owners or custodianswho reside within the boundary limits of his county or city and may requireinformation to this effect from any applicant. Upon receipt of properapplication and current certificate of vaccination as required by thisarticle, the treasurer or other officer charged with the duty of issuing dogand cat licenses shall issue a license receipt for the amount on which heshall record the name and address of the owner or custodian, the date ofpayment, the year for which issued, the serial number of the tag, whether dogor cat, whether male, unsexed female, female or kennel, and deliver the metallicense tags or plates provided for herein. The information thus receivedshall be retained by the treasurer, open to public inspection, during theperiod for which such license is valid. The treasurer may establishsubstations in convenient locations in the county or city and appoint agentsfor the collection of the license tax and issuance of such licenses.

3.1-796.86. (Effective July 1, 2007) How to obtain license.

Any person may obtain a dog license or cat license if required by anordinance adopted pursuant to subsection B of 3.1-796.85, by making oral orwritten application to the treasurer of the county or city in which suchperson resides, accompanied by the amount of license tax and currentcertificate of vaccination as required by this article or satisfactoryevidence that such certificate has been obtained. The treasurer or otherofficer charged with the duty of issuing dog and cat licenses shall only haveauthority to license dogs and cats of resident owners or custodians whoreside within the boundary limits of his county or city and may requireinformation to this effect from any applicant. Upon receipt of properapplication and current certificate of vaccination as required by thisarticle or satisfactory evidence that such certificate has been obtained, thetreasurer or other officer charged with the duty of issuing dog and catlicenses shall issue a license receipt for the amount on which he shallrecord the name and address of the owner or custodian, the date of payment,the year for which issued, the serial number of the tag, whether dog or cat,whether male or female, whether spayed or neutered, or whether a kennel, anddeliver the metal license tags or plates provided for herein. The informationthus received shall be retained by the treasurer, open to public inspection,during the period for which such license is valid. The treasurer mayestablish substations in convenient locations in the county or city andappoint agents for the collection of the license tax and issuance of suchlicenses.
