§ 244. Adult Education Scholarship Program

  • (a)

    • (1) There is established the Adult Education Diploma Scholarship Fund within the Department of Education which shall be available exclusively to students enrolled in the Adult Education Program.

    • (2) The scholarship shall be awarded on a semester basis to residents of the Virgin Islands who are enrolled in the Adult Education Program and who achieve and maintain a grade average of 80 or better for each semester.

    • (3) Students shall be eligible for the scholarship after the completion of the first year provided they have attained an average of 80 or better for that year.

    • (4) The scholarships shall be awarded at the end of each semester and shall be awarded in an amount equal to the registration and tuition fees paid at the beginning of the semester.

    • (5) There is authorized to be appropriated from the General Fund of the Treasury of the United States Virgin Islands during each fiscal year, a sum of $31,000 to be deposited into the Adult Education Diploma Scholarship Fund.

    • (6) All funds appropriated for the Adult Education Diploma Scholarship Fund shall be administered by the Commissioner of Education for the purposes of this section. Upon appropriation, the funds shall remain available until expended.

  • (b) The Board of Education may award scholarship loans and grants to graduates of the Virgin Islands Adult Education Program who are enrolled as students with a minimum of six credits at the University of the Virgin Islands. The Board shall determine the amount of the awards and shall establish eligibility requirements for applicants.
