Chapter 11 - Holidays
§ 171. Legal holidays; serving liquor on Good Friday; performance of acts under law or contract

  • (a) The following days are legal holidays in the Virgin Islands:

    • Every Sunday January 1 (New Year's Day) January 6 (Three King's Day) Third Monday in January (Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday) Third Monday in February (Presidents Day) March 31 (Transfer Day) Holy Thursday Good Friday Easter Monday Last Monday in May (Memorial Day) July 3 (V.I. Emancipation Day) — Danish West Indies Emancipation Day July 4 (Independence Day) First Monday in September (Labor Day) Second Monday in October (Columbus Day and Puerto Rico Friendship Day) November 1 (D. Hamilton Jackson Day) November 11 (Veterans Day) Fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving Day) December 25 (Christmas Day) December 26 (Christmas Second Day) and such other days as the President or the Governor may by proclamation declare to be holidays. Whenever any holiday (other than Sunday) falls upon a Sunday, the Governor by Proclamation may, in his discretion, grant administrative leave on the following Monday, except that Organic Act Day (Third Monday in June), Supplication Day (Fourth Monday in July) and Local Thanksgiving Day (Third Monday in October) shall be observed on the preceding Sunday.
  • (b) Distilled liquor and drinks prepared therewith shall not be served in public places of refreshments between the hours of 9:00 o'clock in the morning and 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon on Good Friday. Whoever violates this subsection shall be fined not more than $200 or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.

  • (c) Whenever any act is appointed by law or contract to be performed upon a particular day, which day falls upon a holiday, that act may be performed upon the next business day with the same effect as if it had been performed upon the day appointed.
