The Secretary of the Navy is authorized, in his discretion, at the request of the Secretary of Health and Human Services, to place gratuitously, at the disposal of the proper quarantine authorities, at any of the ports of the United States, to be used temporarily for quarantine purposes, such vessels or hulks belonging to the United States as are not required for other uses of the national government, subject to such restrictions and regulations as the Secretary of the Navy may deem necessary to impose for the preservation thereof.

REPEALSAct Feb. 15, 1893, ch. 114, 27 Stat. 449, cited as a credit to this section and which abolished the National Board of Health and placed all duties relating to quarantines and quarantine regulations with the Marine Hospital Service, was repealed by act July 1, 1944, ch. 373, title XIII, §1313, formerly title VI, §611, 58 Stat. 714, renumbered title VII, §711, by act Aug. 13, 1946, ch. 958, §5, 60 Stat. 1049; §713 by act Feb. 28, 1948, ch. 83, §9(b), 62 Stat. 47; title VIII, §813, by act July 30, 1956, ch. 779, §3(b), 70 Stat. 721; title IX, §913, by Pub. L. 88–581, §4(b), Sept. 4, 1964, 78 Stat. 919; title X, §1013, by Pub. L. 89–239, §3(b), Oct. 6, 1965, 79 Stat. 931; title XI, §1113, by Pub. TRANSFER OF FUNCTIONSFunctions of Federal Security Administrator transferred to Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare and all agencies of Federal Security Agency transferred to Department of Health, Education, and Welfare by section 5 of Reorg. Plan No. 1 of 1953, set out as a note under section 3501 of this title. Federal Security Agency and office of Administrator abolished by section 8 of Reorg. Plan No. 1 of 1953. Secretary and Department of Health, Education, and Welfare redesignated Secretary and Department of Health and Human Services by section 509(b) of Pub. L. 96–88 which is classified to section 3508(b) of Title 20, Education.
Public Health Service and its functions and personnel transferred from Department of the Treasury to Federal Security Agency pursuant to Reorg. Plan No. I of 1939, set out in the Appendix to Title 5, Government Organization and Employees.
Marine Hospital Service was redesignated Public Health and Marine Hospital Service by act July 1, 1902, ch. 1370, §1, 32 Stat. 712, which in turn was redesignated Public Health Service by act Aug. 14, 1912, ch. 288, §1, 37 Stat. 309.
National Board of Health was abolished and all duties relating to quarantines and quarantine regulations were placed in Marine Hospital Service by act Feb. 15, 1893, ch. 114, 27 Stat. 449.
