§ 41-1-101. State Prisons — Penitentiary Defined — Correctional Facilities

- The penitentiary located upon the farm purchased by the state from M. S. Cockrill, near Nashville in Davidson County, is the state prison, in which convicts sentenced to imprisonment in the penitentiary shall be confined, employed and governed, as provided in this title; but they may be confined and employed in branch prisons as authorized by law.
- “Penitentiary” means and includes the Tennessee state penitentiary in Nashville, Brushy Mountain penitentiary, Fort Pillow state farm and the other penal institutions, reformatories, branches and facilities that may hereafter be acquired, built, constructed or maintained by the state for the purpose of confinement of persons, both male or female, who have been convicted of violating the criminal laws of this state and sentenced to imprisonment in the penitentiary.
- The state regional correctional facility located in Bledsoe County is designated, and shall hereafter be known, as the “Southeastern Tennessee State Regional Correctional Facility.”
- The state special needs correctional facility located in the River Bend area of Davidson County is designated, and shall hereafter be known, as the “Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility.”
