1974 Committee Comment to H 511

This section consolidates a number of former sections dealing with blackmail and extortion, while at the same time expanding upon the concepts embodied in the former crimes. The kinds of threats contemplated under this section need not be in writing, and are not limited to threats of bodily harm. Moreover, the threatened harm need not be directed against the person sought to be intimidated, but may be directed against a third person. The object of the offense is designed to include a purpose to extort a valuable thing or valuable benefit, or to compel the victim to do an unlawful act.

Extortion is a felony of the third degree.
