Act 35 of 1867 472.32 Cars to stop at railroad crossing; exception; penalty. Sec. 32. Street railway companies shall require the drivers of street cars to bring such cars to a full stop before going upon a street railway crossing or the tracks of a steam railroad, and to make sure that no engine or cars are approaching such crossing before he proceeds to go upon the same. If the driver of any street car shall neglect to bring such car to a stop, as hereinbefore provided, he shall for every such neglect be liable to a fine of 25 dollars: Provided, That whenever there shall be adopted and used at any such crossing, an interlocking switch and signal system, or other device or regulation, which in the judgment of the Michigan railroad commission will render it safe to permit cars and trains to pass over such crossing without being brought to a stop, as above provided, said Michigan railroad commission may, by written order, a copy of which shall be filed and retained in its office, give permission for cars and trains to pass, under such regulation as to rate of speed and in other respects as it may deem proper, which order, however, said commission may at any time modify or revoke.
