§ 7-501 - Definitions [Effective until October 1, 2013].

§7-501.

(a) In this subtitle the following words have the meanings indicated.

(b) “Costs” means the cost of prosecuting a person for a crime.

(c) (1) “Crime” means any act or omission for which a statute or ordinance imposes a fine or imprisonment.

(2) “Crime” does not include a municipal infraction under Article 23A, § 3 of the Code.

(d) (1) “Fine” means the monetary penalty prescribed by a statute or ordinance for a crime.

(2) “Fine” does not include costs.

(a) In general. -- In this subtitle the following words have the meanings indicated.

(c) Crime. --

(1) "Crime" means any act or omission for which a statute or ordinance imposes a fine or imprisonment.

(2) "Crime" does not include a municipal infraction under Title 6 of the Local Government Article.

This subsection is new language derived without substantive change from the first sentence of former Art. 38, § 1, as it related to a criminal offense.

** REVISOR'S NOTE

The former reference to "[a]ny such offense may be prosecuted by the arrest of the offender for such offense and by holding him to appear in or committing him for trial in the court which has jurisdiction in the said cases and shall proceed to try or dispose of the same in the same manner as other criminal cases may be tried or proceeded with or disposed of, or such offenses may be prosecuted by indictment in such court" is deleted as unnecessary.

(d) Fine. --

(1) "Fine" means the monetary penalty prescribed by a statute or ordinance for a crime.

(2) "Fine" does not include costs.
