§493.  Compensation of owners

Any person through whose land a public road is laid out may claim a just compensation therefor.  

The jury of freeholders shall assess the damages sustained by each person.  All damages so assessed are parish charges and shall be paid by the parish treasurer.  

Nothing in this Section shall be so construed as to give a right to any person to claim damages for the laying out of a road along the front of his land, according to the former customs existing in this state, nor to affect in any manner the rights of persons to any batture or alluvion already formed or which may be formed on the front of any tract of land which lies on navigable river or water course within the state.
