§183.7.  Pilot program description

A.  The career major program shall be pilot tested in not less than fifteen percent of the high schools operated by each city and parish school system during the 1999-2000 school year.  Each system superintendent shall select the participating schools and submit their names to the appropriate school board for approval.

B.  The career major pilot program shall begin on the first day of the 1999-2000 school year.

C.(1)  Each curriculum design team shall meet during the months of October, February, and June to receive feedback from administrators, instructors, students, and parents involved in the career major program. Such feedback shall be used to revise the program and make needed improvements.  The year-end evaluation of the program shall be held at the June meeting.

(2)  Design teams shall evaluate the success of their programs based on the following:

(a)  Responses provided by parents, students, and community members to survey questions prepared by the design team.

(b)  Comparing the test scores of the career major students to their previous scores.

(c)  Tracking the number of dropouts in the career major program.

(d)  Conducting a survey of the students who either graduated or participated in the career major program to identify their postsecondary status.

D.  Each city or parish school system shall compile a report summarizing their year-end evaluations and recommendations and shall mail such report by July 1, 2000, to the state Department of Education.  The Department of Education shall use such evaluations and recommendations to prepare a comprehensive report, including needed revisions to the current career major program, to be submitted to the Committees on Education of the Senate and House of Representatives by not later than August 15, 2000.  The bureau director shall also forward a copy of the comprehensive report to each system superintendent.
