Sec. 1.

This Act shall be known and may be cited as the Geriatric Medicine Assistance Act.

Sec. 2.

There is created the Geriatric Medicine Assistance Commission.

The Commission shall receive and approve applications for grants from schools,
recognized by the Department of Professional Regulation as being authorized
to confer doctor of medicine, doctor of osteopathy, doctor of chiropractic
or registered professional nursing degrees in the State, to help finance
the establishment of geriatric medicine programs within such schools. In
determining eligibility for grants, the Commission shall give preference to
those programs which exhibit the greatest potential for directly benefiting
the largest number of elderly citizens in the State. The Commission may not
approve the application of any institution which is unable to demonstrate
its current financial stability and reasonable prospects for future
stability. No institution which fails to possess and maintain an open
policy with respect to race, creed, color and sex as to admission of
students, appointment of faculty and employment of staff shall be eligible
for grants under this Act. The Commission shall establish such rules and
standards as it deems necessary for the implementation of this Act.

The Commission shall be composed of 8 members selected as follows: 2
physicians licensed to practice under the Medical Practice Act of 1987
and specializing in geriatric medicine; a registered professional nurse
licensed under the Nursing and Advanced Practice Nursing Act and specializing in
geriatric health care; 2 representatives of organizations
interested in geriatric
medicine or the care of the elderly; and 3 individuals 60 or older who are
interested in geriatric health care or the care of the
elderly. The members of
the Commission shall be selected by the Governor from a list
of recommendations submitted to him by organizations concerned with geriatric
medicine or the care of the elderly.

The terms of the members of the Commission shall be 4 years, except that
of the members initially appointed, 2 shall be designated to serve until
January 1, 1986, 3 until January 1, 1988, and 2 until January 1, 1990.
Members of the Commission shall receive no compensation, but shall be
reimbursed for actual expenses incurred in carrying out their duties.
