240.278   Required course program; Quality Assurance Fund.

240.278  Required course program; Quality Assurance Fund.--

(1)  There is established a required course program funded by the Quality Assurance Fund, which is also hereby established, to be administered by the Board of Regents. The Legislature shall designate funds to be transferred to the fund from the General Revenue Fund. All appropriated funds deposited into the fund shall be invested pursuant to the provisions of s. 18.125. Interest income accruing to such invested funds shall increase the total funds available under this section.

(2)  Funds in the Quality Assurance Fund shall be distributed by the Board of Regents to the universities in the State University System to be used as provided in this section. The Board of Regents shall promulgate rules for the administration of this section, including requirements and procedures for application for funds and for equitable distribution of the funds.

(3)  Funds allocated to a university under this section shall be utilized by that university to establish additional class sections in the summer for required courses that have been closed because all regularly scheduled sections of the course have been filled. However, no additional class section shall be established with funds allocated under this section unless at least 10 students are enrolled in that section. As used in this section, a required course is any course in which a student must enroll in order to proceed with a required course of study at the lower-division level, or any course in which a student must enroll at the upper-division level to fulfill the requirements for a degree with a major in a specific field.
