§ 53.1-16. Police power of internal investigators; training.
The Director may designate the inspector general of the Department and no more than thirty members of the internal investigations unit of the Department to have the same powers as a sheriff or a law-enforcement officer in the investigation of allegations of criminal behavior affecting the operations of the Department. Investigators so designated shall receive the training required by the Department of Criminal Justice Services for law-enforcement personnel before exercising such powers.
Nothing in this section shall be construed to grant the Department any authority over the operation and security of local jails which is not specified in other provisions of law.
